Executive Director's Message
|
Margaret Mead is often quoted as saying, "Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed individuals can change the world. In fact, it's the only thing that ever has." Thank you for being one of those thoughtful, committed individuals. As the holidays near and we prepare for 2025, I am filled with gratitude for you and your inspired generosity of spirit.

“It is an honor to be the presenting sponsor of this event,” said Eric Pfeifer, CFI Board Member and Founder of Pfeifer Realty Group. “When Mary Ellen and I moved to Sanibel, I wanted to coach our kids and get involved in the Sanibel Youth Sports programs. I even started the Sanibel Flag Football program for boys and girls, sanctioned by the NFL. Now, it’s time to engage our new residents, including those who haven’t had the chance to get involved before. With many residents still displaced or not yet back full-time, it’s up to those of us here to step up and deepen our engagement. Mary Ellen and I are committed to bringing our community back together as quickly as possible.”
Over 40 organizations and community groups have registered for the Volunteer Expo this year. The Volunteer Expo aligns with CFI’s mission of inspiring philanthropy, leadership and collaboration for the vitality of the Island community. One of its three signature initiatives is to strengthen the local nonprofit sector through engagement and education.

Tell us about the Christmas tradition you and your wife, Nancy, share with your family’s younger generations?
We call it the “Go-Giver luncheon,” loosely based on a little book called “The Go-Giver” by Burg & Mann. The four generations of our family (my sister and Nancy’s six siblings and their families) have celebrated holidays together for about 50 years.
The Go-Giver luncheon is for that fourth generation – 25 kids ages 1 through 26 – to report to the older generations – about 50 people ages 35 to 81 – how they spent the Go-Giver money – $50 cash each, sent by mail at Thanksgiving – on charitable causes or people in need. We do this every year. |

You could be playing golf and relaxing, but instead you chose to become deeply involved in the important work being done on the islands. You’re a longtime Kiwanian, have served on the Sanibel Sea School and SCCF boards, and you and Nancy have long volunteered with Chapel by the Sea. What does this service mean to you?
My golf handicap is 24, so that’s not a basis for a satisfying retirement. Being engaged is a chance to find folks in need and help them lift themselves up. Some of my board work has been to improve the way in which organizations function at the board level. The Captiva Chapel and the Sea School needed fundraising help when we got involved and few people are interested in that kind of work. We both find fundraising an art form if you do it right. It’s about listening to people and understanding their values, then asking them to help.

| How has Nancy, your wife for over 60 years, influenced your perspective on volunteerism and generosity?
She is the bighearted, firm-handed one, very organized, very caring. Our marriage is built on giving to our three kids and three of her siblings who were minors when her parents suddenly passed away within 18 months around 1970. That teaches you to focus outward and to work as a team out of necessity. We both have those giving genes in our families. |
